With the USA constantly changing tariff rates, we quickly designed a solution that allowed users to quickly see impacts to their supply chain.

Background & Goal

Background & Goal

With recent spikes on tariff rates, our users had question on impacts to their physical supply chain. Their were two groups of users, those that had suppliers in other countries and those that only had direct suppliers in the USA.

Our goal was to show tariff impacts on direct suppliers and provide sub-tier visibility. Impact needed to be communicated in spend ($) and would show analyst a breakdown of how each product bought from specific countries was being tariffed. We saw this as an opportunity to test out new actionability features by providing alternative suppliers that could have potential saving and a simulated tariff calculator for tariffs that weren't official.

During our ideation phase we tested out several layout and visualization that could help communicate the impact on their supply chain. We found that a tree map was helpful for users as they could quickly tell which countries had the highest supplier concentration and highest tariff rate by using size & color to quickly scan. However the solutions did struggle with user trying to get down to the supplier with the highest impact.

After our first release we had helpful feedback that allowed me to adjust the final solution. Users wanted to see the tree map context of their spend data and wanted more filtering controls to parse down the set of suppliers. The new tariff dashboard quickly told users how much tariffs were impacting them and which countries had the largest impact by supplier or spend totals. We also include new filtering interaction and spend views so that analyst could have a more detailed view of the tree map and sub set.
